Insulation

Boron is used as a flame retardant in natural fibers such as textiles, plastics, wood, paper and cotton.

It is used in the forms of borax pentahydrate and boric acid in the cellulose insulation; zinc borate, barium metaborate, boron phosphate and ammonium fluoborate in PVC and borax and boric acid in the textile. It interrupts the material's contact with oxygen and suppresses the flame during combustion. It increases flammability resistance of the material, reduces smoke and prevents the release of harmful gases.
